PhlatLight Technology

Invented and manufactured by Luminus Devices, PhlatLight technology is a new type of solid state light source that combines the benefits of both LED and laser technologies.  This unique solid state lighting technology is ideal for display and illumination applications that require high brightness and the efficient harnessing of light from a small point source.

Reliability

PhlatLight LEDs are one of the most reliable light sources in the world today.  PhlatLight LEDs have passed a rigorous suite of environmental and mechanical stress tests, including mechanical shock, vibration, temperature cycling and humidity, and have been fully qualified by several companies for mass production for use in even the most extreme high power and high current applications.

Unlike conventional LEDs, which emit into an epoxy-based encapsulant, PhlatLight LEDs emit directly into air, resulting in significantly longer lifetimes.  PhlatLight LEDs have very low failure rates and median lifetimes that are well above 100,000 hours under extreme, high current operating conditions.

Luminus has instituted a two year warranty for its PhlatLight products - a first of its kind for LEDs in the projection TV industry.  The benefits of Luminus’ two year warranty apply to PhlatLight devices used for display and illumination applications.

Environmental Benefits

The consumer electronics and general lighting industries are working diligently to reduce the impact of their products on the environment.  At Luminus, we are proud to contribute to this initiative with PhlatLight LEDs making a better, greener world by reducing power consumption and reducing the amount of hazardous waste entering the environment.

PhlatLight Reduces Power Consumption

In consumer electronics, projection products using PhlatLight LEDs use far less power than comparable products illuminated by mercury-arc, high intensity discharge, or halogen lamps, which means they help to reduce air pollution from carbon emissions.

Environmental Highlight: Portable Projectors

Portable projectors are a class of projectors weighing under four pounds.  A new class of portable projector now available is the LG Electronics HS-101 Ultra-Portable Projector, using PhlatLight LEDs instead of the usual mercury-arc lamp.  PhlatLight allows the HS-101 to be a smaller, lighter, quieter more versatile product, and when compared to the average power consumption of ten popular lamp based portable projectors, the HS101 consumes 60% less power.

PhlatLight Helps To Reduce Hazardous Waste

All PhlatLight products manufactured by Luminus are RoHS compliant and 100% free of hazardous materials, including lead and mercury.

High intensity mercury arc lamps used in video projection, such as those in PTVs or front projectors, contain between 10 to 50mg of mercury.  PTV lamps fade during their life and eventually burn out, requiring replacement every 2,000 to 6,000 hours.  When the lamps in these products are replaced or the product is discarded at the end of its life, it must be discarded in an environmentally safe manner to avoid contaminating the environment.

With millions of PTVs and projectors sold each year and millions of lamps replaced, the use of PhlatLight in these products reduces hazardous waste and overall ownership costs..
